We have had a great summer, it was definitely a great year for swimming! I'm always glad when the pool gets used, and it was used quite a bit. The kids realized that they enjoy swimming at night with the pool light on, it is neat to see the water refections on everything.

One thing I have been able to do this summer is to begin volunteering. I've been looking for ways to get to plugged into the community around me and so I thought a volunteer position would be a great way to get outside of my comfort zone a bit and meet new people. In June, I began volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House here in Columbus. Right now, it is the 2nd largest house in the world! It is a beautiful facility and it is maintained very well. I really enjoy working there, and there is something different to do every day. My duties range from preparing lunch to doing laundry to basic housekeeping of rooms to answering phones and guests questions. It is so cool to know that you are being a blessing to people who are going threw a tough time in their lives--a sick child. I did not realize how much goes into running such a place. They have different groups come in every night to serve dinner and everything they use in the house has been donated (they put out a "wish list" every month of their needs)--amazing how generous people are! They collect pop tabs that they turn in to be recycled and use the money from that as well to manage the house--feel free to collect those and I will gladly take them in! There are so many ways to volunteer, I had no idea!

We have also started school again, I have all high schoolers this year. High school is way easier than the lower grades in my opinion. This year, I have one less due to graduation--still hard to believe! We are doing a worldview class with others this year, actually, we have 10 students in the class. I am looking forward to some great conversations! If you know anything about me, I am passionate about teaching worldview and making sure our kids know how to think! We are doing drama again this year as well. A friend and I wrote the play for this fall, it is a funny who dunnit--is that possible!? We have not given out the ending yet and there is much speculation about who is guilty--so much fun having that knowledge!!!

We are still plugging away at church. There are some new things on the horizon that are looking very exciting, I'll keep you posted as they come about.

So that was the past three months for me in a nutshell. Sorry if I bored you too much!

What's the Church's Responsibility?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 194px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DQidywvAfMc/Tfe4sNFlC8I/AAAAAAAAAFI/vs5EFKMbOIE/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618162129734798274" />
My husband and I have had more than one conversation about this topic. I guess when you set out to start a church, you start to evaluate everything--style, atmosphere, core values, etc. Our church is different, for goodness sake, we watch a preacher on-line 500+ miles away! And yet, it works! It's the way we do church, we realize it's not for everyone, and that's ok. But where does the church stand in area of responsibility of the spiritual growth of a believer?

It seems like we have been programed to run to the church for our growth, or perhaps blame the church for lack thereof. For some reason, probably culture, we have ceased to take responsibility for the things we should being doing on our own--raising our children, reaching out to the unsaved, helping the poor, growing in our walk with Christ. The church is to equip the believers to serve the body, it doesn't say spoon feed and coddle for years on end.

Most of us can read, so why aren't more of us digging into God's Word and following His leadings. Why is it assumed that people just can't possibly understand the Bible and therefore we must talk down to them instead of expecting them to do it on their own? One of my favorite quotes is, "Children will live up to your expectations." Why do we expect so little out of "church people"?

I'm not saying that we leave people out to dry--it is hard to know where to get started with Bible reading, but instead of referring them to an easy to understand book of the Bible to start with, we refer them to a book about the Bible, and so there's no immersing them in the Word. We have so many studies and step-by-step plans that we often forget that all we truly need is the Bible!

I think one way to grow is to get outside of our warm little comfort zone and meet others outside our world. Why do we wait on the church to do that for us as well. It's great when there are organized church functions, but why will we only participate in that? How often do we get so involved in those opportunities that it truly changes us, not just make us feel like we did a good thing and mark that off our list. I realize it is hard to figure out where to get started--but I believe we must.

So that is what I have been sitting on lately. I have an opportunity to serve in a capacity that is out of my comfort zone, and they are asking for a commitment on how long I will serve, scary but something I know I need to do--and I truly want to do as well!

Control or Influence?

Have you ever thought about how your role as a mom changes as your children get older? When they are young, you control their entire world--what they eat, what they wear, when they go to bed, even how their bedroom is decorated, and the toys they play with. But what happens when they get older and have opinions of their own? How do we go about giving up that control and let them make the choices?

This is a hard one. I remember when my daughter was in first grade and she told me she wanted to get her hair cut, now that should be not be a hard thing to let her do, however, her hair was beautiful and it was long enough for her to sit on. I realized that I needed to help her make decisions and getting her hair cut was not something that would hurt her but it could be a lesson on making good choices. I had explained that you could not put the hair back on if she didn't like it cut, and that it would take a really long time for it to grow back. She still wanted to do it, so I let her, I think it hurt me more than her! She loved it! It looked so cute. It was, in the end, a good decision, but I allowed it to be hers, she took ownership of it.

I think that's one of our jobs as parents, to teach them to make their own wise decisions. I don't believe that our job is ever "over", I think the job description just changes. For me and where I am in my life at this point, my perspective, it warms my heart to see decisions that my children are making. I love having conversations with them about what they will do in different situations, I try to be careful to give advice not instructions--not always easy, but I think very necessary.

Somewhere along the line we are no longer controllers but influencers. Where you are in the process?

Looking Up

I took a walk tonight--well, it's time for the "yikes, it's almost time to pull out the bathing suit and can't hide behind the bulky sweaters anymore," season, so I'm walking. I realize I need to do more than walk, but it's a start!

I took my iPod with me and listened to a new praise and worship album. As I was walking, I realized something, I rarely look up. I guess I look down just be sure I don't step on or in something. But I miss a lot! So, I decided that I would make myself look up and see what I was missing. I saw the setting sun through the leafless tree, squirrels climbing to their nests, the water of the swollen stream rushing over the rocks. I saw trees just starting to bud and some with a little green, there were flowers daring to bloom; I saw potential. Potential for what is to come, of the beauty beneath--all these long months of seemingly bareness will give way to beauty and fullness.

How often I feel like that--barren and empty. Does it come from not looking up enough? From not trusting? Perhaps. Have you ever questioned your potential? We all have it right? Sometimes during the "winter" it's hard to see that there's more--more lying beneath was is seen.

What season are you in? I think I know where I am...

Texting

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 295px; height: 171px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1EtETsEtUt8/TV2N9Dt82TI/AAAAAAAAAEk/EKYGBOFR9eE/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5574767993864116530" />
So I have to be totally honest, I have not been a big fan of the texting revolution. As with any new technology, I am usually hesitant. I'm not a luddite, I just don't always see the need for it--it's probably more about change than anything. I think some of my issues with texting is the rudeness that surrounds it. And isn't really just easier to talk to the person?

Well, we recently had a change in our phone plan that now allows us to text. It took me a awhile to figure out how to do it--how do kids these days just know how to do these thing, are they born with that knowledge? I have to admit it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Far less impersonal than I realized too. While I still think it is much easier to call and actually speak to someone, I do see the advantages of texting. It is nice to send "thinking and praying for you", "how's your week?", "where are we going to meeting for coffee?", or other random thoughts that don't require a long conversation. I even have a couple of friends that the majority of my contact with them is only by text.

I do have to be completely honest now, yesterday I was in bed all day with a virus. My kids are at the age that they don't need me to function so there was no need for me to leave my bedroom or for them to come in and ask for anything. However, not feeling like I could safely walk around due to being crazy dizzy, I needed some medicine. What was I to do? Yes, I did it! I had my cell close and I texted my son who was in the other room and asked him to come in and see me! I know it was crazy and he did laugh a little when he came in, but hey, it worked! Later that day, he texted me to see if I wanted anything to eat! So it worked both ways.

While I still think that texting should not consume your life as it does, or seems to, for some, I do see the benefit of it. And I am getting much better at it, although, I'm still not 100% sure of what all the abbreviations mean, I'm still new at it and I'm sure that it will come with time.

Walking Worthy

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 106px; height: 91px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/TVL4OGjtL9I/AAAAAAAAAEc/IBlHqgdXyo8/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571788610172956626" />
Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. Ephesians 4:1-4

Living a life worthy of my calling...have you ever thought about that? God has called me, do I live that way? Am I doing what He wants me to? The enormity of the fact that God has called me is overwhelming to me--it's huge! Why is it that we need to be reminded to walk worthy? Is it any wonder that those words are followed up with--get over yourselves and play nice with others (ok, so I put that in my own words, but you get the point!). We can get so inwardly focused that we forget Who we are living for. How is that possible?

Oh, to be so consumed with doing what God has equipped and called me to do and to turn away from my own comfort and preferences! Where would this world be! How the Gospel would be advanced, if only, we would lead a life worthy of our calling!

A Blog on Blogging

We had dinner with some friends tonight and started talking about blogging. The idea of what to blog about came up and the revelation that two of us at the table enjoy blogging but we feel that we need something glorious and wonderful to write and so in the in process we fail to blog as much as we truly would like. Why is that? Are we trying to paint a rosier picture than what is real? Or perhaps, do we feel like we need an angle to catch someone's attention?

I can only speak for me, but sometimes I'm afraid of offending someone with my words. The written word is so difficult to totally convey tone and at times can easily be misinterpreted. And the fear of "do I really have anything important to say?" Really? I guess if you are reading this then you feel that my opinion is somewhat important, after all, no one is forcing you to read this.

What would happen if we truly did see our every day as something glorious and wonderful? Our moments as memories that will last forever, not always having to "make" memories but enjoying the ones that just happen. That's what we should write about...our lives, our wonderful, one-of-a-kind lives and all of the incredible things that God is doing in them! What a neat Spiritual journey we would have recored!

James 4:14, Psalm 39:4-5, Psalm 139

Quote for the Day

Here is a quote that I found as I began to read Sun Stand Still by Steven Furtick. So many people take the beginning of the year to make changes in their lives, I guess it's a good time to start something new--at the beginning. I've never been one for making resolutions, perhaps it's my inability to focus on anything for too long, honestly, I usually just forget! And most resolutions are things we don't want to do anyway, so why do it!

This year though, we're not making any resolutions per say, but we are making some changes. My family is venturing out on a new adventure. Actually, we're not totally new to this adventure but the way we are going about it is new. We are planting a new church. We are going to host a video church. If you are not familiar with a video church, you may be thinking that we are a little crazy! Honestly, we can tell that many of our friends and those we are leaving behind at the church we have been attending for the past 3 years, think we have lost our minds! Maybe we have, but we truly feel that God is calling us to do this, NOW! The cool thing about a video church is that so many people can benefit from an incredible speaker that is hundreds of miles away. It is so much more than a bunch of people watching TV together! We will totally be able to care and love for the people that come, we are praying hard for people to come and meet Jesus--that's the ultimate goal!

We start this Sunday! Crazy I know! We are both freaked out and incredibly excited about this! So we are praying for people, please pray with us that God would bring us people--people who have a love and passion to reach other people, and people who need to meet Jesus!

I'll keep you posted as see what God has for us on this adventure! Can't wait to see where God takes us!!! Hold on!!!

What if...

We never went through the dreaded "why" phase with our children when they were little, however, we had one that incessantly asked "what if...?" That was about as bad as "why", because he would set up scenarios that we would have to think through to figure out an answer. In the end, we started asking him "what if?" to make him think about how that situation would turn out, it did curtail some of the questions.

But how often do we truly ask what if? What if we go in this direction? What if we stay where we are? What if we choose this? What if we choose that? There are so many what if's in life, it can be a bit unsettling if you look at them all at once.

Let me throw this out into the world of what if's...What if we truly trusted God and did what He told us to do? What if we just obeyed, instead of, wanting all the answers right now before we get out of the boat? What if Christians dared to get out there and reach people?

What if...?

Road Trip

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 209px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/TPRuIpwVA6I/AAAAAAAAAEI/1wOw80LIfo0/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545178136126489506" />
My husband and I recently had the opportunity to enjoy a week-end away. We had such a wonderful time spending time together and going on an adventure. One thing that we did this past week-end that we've never done before was to use a GPS. I know it sounds crazy in today's world that we have never used one, but I actually prefer a map that I can see the whole picture and know where we are going. The more we used it we realized why people like them, it can get you back on the right road if you make a wrong turn, it tells you how fast you are going or how fast you should be going, it tells you of areas ahead that might be area of slow down due to construction or other traffic tie ups.

It made me think about Who our real GPS is. I am reminded of Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. We are not shown the whole "map", just the turn or step we are to take next and usually that information is not given until it is time to turn. And then, there are those times when we need to be "re-directed" because we have made a wrong turn knowingly or not.

One thing that is different is the fact that you program the GPS to where you want to go, but God has the plan and everything is already programmed, He knows where you are going. It's up to us to follow when He tells us to turn and to turn the right way. It's always interesting to me how He gives you just enough information to make the next step. I'm glad that we can't always see everything that is ahead, there are times that I think we would be overwhelmed.

So what's you next step or turn, have you been given the signal to make a move? Really? How do you go about separating them and then discerning which is which? We are told by Paul in Philippians to be content (Phil. 4:11), but what about being comfortable? I think you can be content while being uncomfortable.

So here's my two cents on the difference--I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this one. To me, being content has to do with a mind set--always wanting more whether it is stuff or otherwise; while I believe God can make you uncomfortable. In some ways, I think God brings us to the place where we are so uncomfortable that we have no choice but to move where He wants us. A lot of the time, it does have to do with getting out of the boat to where He is and move closer to Him. Unfortunately, for me, I tend to be a slow learner in those areas...

It's never fun to be pushed and confined, and sometimes I don't realize it until I'm squeezed so tight that I can not even move any more. So in the end, does being uncomfortable actually make it easier to make the move and be obedient? Perhaps it does. I'm thinking it's time to move, not exactly clear yet on which way to go, but I definitely see my options!

Do you have thoughts on the differences between being content and comfortable? Would love to hear them!

Remembering a Fallen Hero

I did something today that I've never done before. I went to the viewing of a fallen soldier. I didn't know him well, I remember him when he was much younger, but I do know his parents. He was killed last week in Afghanistan. It's been amazing to see the reports on the news and read about it in the paper, the comments on the obituary page have to be so encouraging for his parents. They held the viewing today and the funeral tomorrow at a large church close by, we went early and had to wait more than a half hour to speak with his parents! His parents seem to be doing great! We were told that they were comforting others at church yesterday, at the loss of their only child! That's God's peace! They said they know where he is and that's what they are focusing on. Praying that some will come to know Jesus through his death!

You can't help but think about all of those who have given their lives for our freedom, freedom that we take for granted. How often do we even think about our freedom, of course, that is until we think our freedom has been violated! It also takes me to thoughts of how God gave His only Son so that we might live and have freedom from the penalty of our sins! Another "freedom" that many times I take too much for granted as well.

The next time I hear of a fallen soldier, I will make sure that I listen to their story, remembering that they made a difference, not just in the war but in life as well. They were someone's child, grandchild, sibling, and best friend, so much more than just a military picture on the screen. May we never forget!

Back to School

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 183px; height: 275px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/THsjpEA8a5I/AAAAAAAAADw/3GzapEZ44do/s320/images-1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511037757377244050" />
Well, we are starting back to school tomorrow. It's about a week after most of the government schools, and that's because we can! Looking at the coming year is always a bit overwhelming, but it's always good. I love figuring out what we will study. This year will be very different for me--three of my children will be 95% self-sufficant--I will hand them a schedule and they are off on their own.

My homeschooling journey has very much changed over the years--we've gone from complete hands-on on my part to almost entirely hands-off! Crazy thought for me! I know this is part of the plan, raising young people that can function without me holding their hands, knowing how to discern what they are learning, and overall just knowing how to think! I pray that I have made wise choices and have done my best in those areas.

So off we go into our 8th year at home! I know God will continue to lead us down this path and He knows where we are going...

Encouraging One Another

If you know anything about me, you know that I am passionate about homeschooling! Committed to it and would love to see others commit as well. But how did I go about that? I spent the evening with a couple of friends and we chatted about that. I posed the question "Do you think there is a need for us to get a group of homeschool moms together to encourage one another?" They were both very much in agreement that that would be a good thing. So, where do I being...What is the one thing that homeschool moms need most? What types of questions do they have? In what ways are they overwhelmed, especially if they are new to the world of homeschooling (I call such people "homeschool virgins")?

I am hoping to get a group of moms together soon to encourage one another and truly to come along side each other and let them know that they are not alone in this. Do you ever stop to think about how many different "types" of friendships there are? Of course, there are the casual acquaintances that you politely nod your head to and smile at at church. Then there are the "duty" friends that you really know nothing about but because of responsibilities or other commitments (yours or your husbands), you make small talk about the weather and such because honestly, you really have nothing to talk about with them. There are also the "needy" friends that at times can suck the life out of you if you're not careful. We all have good friends that we share most of what's going on in our lives but even then we are still guarded to some extent. Some of us have "crisis" friends that we love dearly, but don't always hear from unless there is a crisis, however, we gladly run to their side because we know that they trust us and need us to hold them up. The accountability friends are very important, you choose these friends wisely, because you want to know that you can trust them with your "stuff". And what about the "lifers"? These are the friends, few they may be, that will be our friends forever because, frankly, they just know way too much about us!

I was chatting with a "newer" friend today and we were discussing friendships. We were discussing difficult aspects of friendships, like when we, ourselves, get in the way and perhaps our selfish side takes over. Or when we way over think a situation or conversation and get all worked up over something that is only in our head! I'm really creative so I do this really well! As I was thinking about our talk, I began to think more about friendships in general and how God has used them in my life.

There are different seasons to friendships. Was there ever a time that God has brought someone into you life that you knew would be a dear friend and wondered why? I know that's a strange question, but it's happened to me! I remember meeting someone and as we talked, I knew that we were going to have a good friendship and wondering why I was going to "need" this friend. Only in time did I realize why she had been brought into my life at that particular moment. Today we are still friends but only talk or e-mail only occasionally, but for that season of life we needed each other.

What happens when you are feeling God leading you to sever a relationship? That's a tough one. Many times, basic circumstances in life cause relationships to end, or at least take a huge step back from what they once were. Is this a bad thing? Not necessarily. I think many times God uses us and others in different ways to teach things that we could only learn from that person at that time. If we do not move on, we may never know who else He has for us to learn from or teach.

God made us to be relational, and friendships are a gift from Him!

I do realize that you are trying to figure out which type of friend you are...

A Quote

If you can fully explain what is going on in your church, then God is not working in your church.

--Perry Noble, Perry Noble Leadership Podcast, Desperation = Inspiration

Quote for the Day

The most dangerous ideas in a society are not the ones being argued, but the ones that are assumed.

--C. I'm talking about things God shows me. I just finished listening to a sermon in which we were presented with a choice, Would you rather be a chia pet or a guitar? The point being until we are fully surrendered to Holy God we are as useless as a chia pet. On the other hand, when we completely surrender to God, we become a guitar that He can use to make beautiful music. Why is it that we are so afraid to allow God to freely and totally use us as He sees fit? After all, we are made in His image, He created us because He wanted us and loves us, more than we can imagine--remember He sent Jesus! Oh, how we could turn this world upside down for the sake for Christ if we were totally sold out and surrendered to Almighty God! Lord, may we be BOLD in your name!

** Sermon by Perry Noble, Newspring Church, Identity Theft Series, Chia Pet

An Eye-Opening Lesson From History

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 137px; height: 96px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/S6q_xHjUDqI/AAAAAAAAADY/-zWX50vAbvY/s200/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452381149447065250" />
So here is a short history quiz for you. What time and place in history do the following statements take place? I'll even make it multiple choice...

Use these choices for all of the questions:

A - America during the 1950's
B - Ancient Greece, during the later stages of its decline
C - America today

* People, especially the educated ones, have rejected traditional religion
* Cults from the East have been accepted
* Astrology is practiced
* Patriotism has declined
* Men practice manners which have previously been considered effeminate
* The upper class is consumed with the pursuit of pleasure
* Education stresses knowledge more than character, and produces masses of half-educated people
* Public athletic games have turned into professional contests
* Homosexuality is popular
* Men who want to watch dances by unclad women do not have to go far to find them
* The dramas of the day are full of seduction and adultery
* A women's liberation movement has brought women into active roles in a previously male-oriented culture
* Motherhood us devalued, and the bearing of children is viewed as an inconvenience
* Abortion is commonly practiced, as well as infanticide

So, how'd you do? Well, if you answered B or C, either one will do, to any of the questions, then you were right! Little scary, huh? We can learn a lot from history,but how many people actually take the time to investigate it?

I found this quiz in a book that the boys and I are doing in school this year, Assumptions That Affect Our Lives by Dr. Christian Overman. This is chapter 1!!! Can't wait to dig deeper in this book! We were looking at how our culture has been affected by primarily both the ancient Greeks and ancient Hebrews. We are at this point in our country leaning more toward the Greek influence, and we see where that got them...

Just wanted to share what we were learning and hopefully, inspire you to look at our current culture differently and stand counter to it!

Bailey

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/S6qkMSvQFlI/AAAAAAAAADQ/a3jVL0zbFQo/s320/P1050035.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452350829980816978" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/S6qkLyQLGLI/AAAAAAAAADI/55tnZYah-Uo/s320/P1050030.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452350821260531890" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/S6qkLerQJ2I/AAAAAAAAADA/P73l4zXDKrQ/s320/P1040907.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452350816005400418" />
So this is Bailey. She has lived with us for a few months now and as you can see she is quite comfortable here. She believes she is royalty and expects those around her to treat her that way. The girls decided to take advantage of my birthday and planned a night out. I cannot remember the last time I laughed that hard! We had a great dinner at Hoggy's and then dessert at Cheesecake Factory, needless to say we were stuff, happy, but stuffed! The part that was the most fun was what happened between the pork and the cheesecake! We did a little shopping, so to speak. I'm guessing that since I am getting so old (I'm the oldest of the group by the way) that they thought I needed a little help picking some things out. As a gift one on my friends gave me a gift card for a free piece of... well, let's just say apparel. So we went to pick it out. We got to laughing so hard, and making comments about all of the choices I had, that the sales lady kept coming to check on us. I'm pretty sure she thought we had had a little too much to drink, but it was water all around for us! Finally, after picking out just the right piece of "clothing" that represented the evening well, I used my gift card to pay for it, however, as we were leaving we found the perfumes. Now, we girls can't smell just one, so we had lots of smells going on in the store. After we found just the right one, one friend thought it would be good to spray my new "clothing". I have to apologize to her husband who is probably still smelling the perfume in his car! Of course, we laughed about that too!

What a great night, thanks my friends for a very fun, memorable evening! We need to do that again soon! Love you all!

Hello, my name is Vicki and I just turned 40!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 126px; height: 84px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/SwHBU7DtEMI/AAAAAAAAAC4/tXduHGrvn_U/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404813593016078530" />
That's right I just turned 40! Isn't if funny how we think some ages are more significant than others! Did we not live through the others years to get to this one? I've had people ask how I was feeling about turning 40. But what are they really asking...you're kinda getting old are you ok with that? Ummmm, yeah, I'm still alive aren't I! : )

I'll be honest, turning 30 was really difficult for me. When you are in high school and looking at the whole world in front of you, you make mental goals of where you want to be at certain times in your life. Well, 30 is one of those, surely by the time you turn 30 you should have it altogether. Ha! At 30, I had 4 children (6,5,4 and 2) there was no "together" anywhere to be seen! Survival mode better sums it up. Now don't get me wrong, I would not trade those days or my children for anything, it just wasn't the picture I had of where I should be.

So now that I am a decade past all of that and I think about being 40, I realize/have learned that nobody has it altogether! Amazing what a little time and perspective can do for you!

I am very blessing with a wonderful husband that loves me, and incredible children. I have family and friends whom I cherish. Even after being told that I didn't need a big party, my husband and mother threw one any way (I knew they would), and it was a wonderful evening! The party was, however, trumped by the OSU game, but living smack dap in the middle of Buckeye Country what can you do! I did find out who my "real" friends are because they were talking to me instead of watching the game! Not really, I know they all love me too! : ) I'm just glad they won so everyone was in a good mood!

One thing that really sticks out to me is the fact that God has never left me, or tired of being there for me during these past 40 years. When I think about the history that we have, all that He has done and all the places He has taken me, it is very overwhelming! What's even more amazing is that I know He will continue to be with me over the next 40 (or so) years, and so as I look ahead now from this age, I have no idea where I'm going but that's ok, He knows the way and I'll let Him show me the steps!

Everyday Life

Oh, sometimes you just have to laugh! Day-to-day life is the best, it's the little things that make you smile.

This afternoon, as my husband and I were sitting and talking, he was flipping through the ads that come in the mail. He was looking an ad from a grocery store and was telling me some of the prices. He told me the price of bacon and I, thinking that was a pretty good price, asked him if it was the 12 oz. or 16 oz. package. He just looked at me, after a minute he asked how I knew the size of the bacon. And then he tested me on potato chips, and I was right again! I told him that was my job! I am not one that goes to the store and just randomly picks stuff up--no, mom and I have a lengthy process of planning meals and shopping as cost effectively as possible! So you can better believe that I am going to get as much bacon as I can for the lowest price!!!

Then, one of my favorites today--one of my children, told me that they just figured out what "six-feet-under" means! Ahhhh, perhaps we should have better classes on idioms!

Oh, by the way, I have now been passed in height by 3 of my children! Of course, I tell them that is not really that big of an accomplishment, but I guess it's a big deal to a growing boy!

Good times!

Weird!

Weird...have you ever felt that way? And not even sure why? I've been struggling through some things and I'm just feeling weird and that's about all that I can do to explain it. It's not comfortable and I don't really think most others would understand. It's somewhat a feeling of uselessness, or perhaps a feeling of being replaced. I think anytime you are replaced, you are not sure where you fit anymore. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not that those who have replaced you are bad, in fact, they are doing a great job, just without you and it doesn't seem right to jump in and help them. I hesitate to even mention it because I don't want a "pity" position, but what do you do with it? Where do you go from here? The circumstances are not that which I can leave and "move on", so how do I "move on" without leaving? I've been ponding this for a while now with no idea of an answer. I do realize that this is a time of growth--better yet pruning! Very uncomfortable! My facade is wearing down and I feel like others are beginning to see my frustration. How do you cope with that--you want to be real but you also don't want to be seen as a whiner! It's hard to keep up an appearance when you are so sad and confused on the inside. I'm sure this isn't making a lot of sense but then again, I'm just feeling weird!

Different Drummer

Have you ever felt out of sync with everyone else? You are marching along, playing your instrument to the best of your ability and suddenly realize that not only are you on a different page but playing a whole different song altogether! I feel like that much of the time--I'm different--I see the world differently than most. I don't like doing things like everyone else; unless there is a good reason, and "because it's always been done that way" is not a good enough answer for me. We will not answer for "the way it's always been done." It all boils down to what "THE BOOK" says, just prove it.

We are called to be salt and light in verse 13 of Matthew 5; it then goes on in the following verses to talk about a city that is set on a hill, everyone can see it and it's different from the other towns. How are we, as Christ followers, set apart in today's world? Sometimes, there's no difference at all, that makes me sad. I found a sermon on-line this week from a pastor whose blog I found to be straight and to the point. However, after downloading some of his sermons, I was taken back with the permission he was giving his people to get involved with the world. He told them it was ok to do the same things everyone else is doing. How can we stand apart and be different if we are right there with everyone else. Now, I'm not advocating that we hold up in our homes and never talk to anyone, quite the contrary, if we are engaging (not participating with them) them and going about our business, they will see we are different.

Are you marching to the beat of a different drummer? Or do you fit far too well in our world?

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. We have removed grown-up wisdom and allowed them to drift into a self-constructed, highly relativistic world of friendship and peers." - William Damon, Stanford University Center on Adolescence

I love quotes! I found this one in an e-mail from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.

I, occasionally, get asked why we homeschool. I think the Bible is pretty clear that it is the responsibility of the parents to raise and train children, no one else can do it for you. But there are now studies popping up that once again prove that the Bible is right! I looked up William Damon, the author of this quote, and I saw nothing to indicate his religious beliefs so I do not know where he stands on such issues. However, he has done studies on adolescence and morals and the decline in our society and the quote is the result of his observation.

It's interesting to me how the farther we get from the Bible, it seems that there are things continually pointing us back to it and the truth found in it. But perhaps, trying to figure out why--why write anything at all, why would anyone want to hear what I have to say?

Well, I have a few thoughts...first, I think I want to see this as a journal. A place to write things that I can go back at some point and see where I've been and what I've journeyed through. Second, it's time for me to be real again.

We had a church picnic tonight in which a few people shared what God has done or is doing in their lives. After our time together, I spoke to one of the men that shared. He said it was so hard to talk about himself; he would much have rather been talking about his job.

Why is it so hard to be ourselves? Could it be that we are afraid of letting down our guard and letting people see us for what we are and they may not like us? Do we perceive that others are perfect and that they wouldn't understand?

I think that those are all lies dangled before us to distract us from praising our God. If we are never open about our struggles, how then can we ever share what wonderful things God is doing? How can others pray and encourage us if we put on a nice facade?

So, in saying all of that, my goal is to write about the things that I am learning. If no one ever reads it that's fine, I will have it to look back on and remember...

Miss California, You Go Girl!

Did you see this? Although not the first time I had heard that statement, I think even more today we need to be actively challenging things.

Why do you do the things you do? Have you ever wondered that? How much of our days are consumed with doing things the way they have always been done? Do we question the "normal" stuff or just go about our usual busyness?

Now, to be honest, I've been called a rebel more than once, go figure. That label has not been used in an unkind way or because I have done "bad" things. On the contrary, I usually get called that because I have stepped out of the box of what is expected: the change of a church home, pulling my children out of traditional schooling, not wanting my children involved in an organized youth program, etc. Things that we never question, we just do them and don't even think about it.

If we truly want to follow God's leading, there will be times that He calls us to do things that are contrary to the norm. Isaiah 55:8 says, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. That's a hard one to wrap our minds around, it's contrary to our culture. And our comfort zone!

In Romans 12:1-2 it says, "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (ESV). We must test the things we do and think about, even if that means going against the flow. If we test everything against the scriptures and have a book, chapter and verse for everything we do, we may look weird to the outside world but we will be on the mark with God.

So what ways do you challenge the status quo? Look around at what you do and ask yourself "Why?" It might be interesting to see what you come up with!

On the Road Again...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/Satb_z1AmQI/AAAAAAAAACg/VtV5wRHgssI/s200/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5308437737588693250" />
Well, we aren't called Journey Church for nothin'! We will soon be finding another place to hold our Sunday meetings. We do not believe that God is calling us to build/buy our own building to meet in. I guess, there are a few reasons behind that: first, we don't want to be tied to a building and become focused on it and not people; next, we want to be able to give to others (i.e. missions, those who are in need, etc), instead of, paying for all of the up keep of a building; and finally, we don't want to get too comfortable! So I guess that leaves us looking for a new home. Where we find ourselves right now, however, is not new for us; in the 14 months we have been meeting on Sundays, we have met in 3 different places (and 2 different times), each unique to itself. I don't know all of reasons why God keeps moving us, but one reason I can't overlook is the fact that with every new place God brings us new people! I have to believe that because He is moving us to a new place that there is someone we will cross paths with that we wouldn't have where we are now. It's wonderful to be a part of a church that just wants to be available to be used by God, and to let Him lead us wherever He wants us to be. I can't wait to see where He takes us this time, it's always an adventure, and that's a good thing!

A Quote for the Day

I found this quote on an e-mail from TheChristianWorldview.com, I thought it summed up a lot of what is going on in our world today.

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half of the people get the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that, my dear friend, is about the end of any nation." I have always been a poor speller.

Well, we now have the most liberal, socialistic President ever! If this is not a call to Christians to wake up and take a stand, I don't know what would be! Although, it's staggering to me just how many Christians voted for him! My government teacher in high school said, "if you don't vote, you can't complain!" I have come to understand the truth in that statement more and more over the years. However, might I add something to that...instead of complaining, which by the way we could really get in to, why don't we pray. We are told in I Timothy 2:2 that we should pray for our leaders. And as hard as that may be for us to do, I believe we must! Now is the time for Christians to stand up and the best place for us to start is on our knees!

Let's remember that this election and the results of it, did not surprise God. I believe we are seeing God through the lifting of His great hand of protection over our country. And this I do know--that God is still on His throne and that seat is NOT up for grabs!

May God bless America!

How to Worry Less

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/SXSXLOhF3aI/AAAAAAAAACI/EsZYCpQwxsI/s200/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293021681198423458" />
As the kids get older, it seems that there is so much more to worry about. Or could it be that the worry changes? This, too, is coming from the fact that our oldest just got her driver's permit! (I'm sooooo not old enough for that!!) There are so many ways for them to get hurt, and not just physically. I guess this is where the rubber meets the road, did we do our job well? Did we train them up so that they will make wise choices?

I believe it was Mother's Day this past year that our pastor did a different type of service (now I must say that a lot of our services are different so this was not totally new), he and his wife shared about rasing their children. It was neat to hear from someone who had been there done that. One of the things that she said has really stuck with me, she said to "pray more and worry less." I like that, we have access to the God of the universe and yet we worry about things! Seems silly doesn't it when we look at it from that perspective!

So I am trying to pray more and worry less! The influences are everywhere. One assignment we did was called "The Evaluator" in which we analyzed things we allow into our minds that could influence us. We had to pick a book, movie, album or TV show to evaluate or put through the ringer so to speak. The discussion was wonderful!

Here are a few of the questions, are you ready?

* What attracts you to this form of entertainment? Why do you like it?

* How does it make you feel?

* What are the major messages being sent? Do you agree or disagree with them? What are the subtle messages?

* Does it reflect reality?

* How do the messages compare with your personal values?

* What might happen if you imitated the lifestyles and choices of the characters?

*How does it make you feel to know that by supporting this entertainment you are supporting the ideas it is promoting?

And this is the kicker--
* Would you feel comfortable if Jesus watched this with you? What would He say about it? Does the Bible say anything about entertainment like this?

So how did you do? What did you evaluate? One show that was brought up was Hannah Montana. One of the subtle messages we talked about in this show was the sissifying (is that a word?) of the men in this show. They are seen as weak and dopey, we are so inundated with feminism in our society that it is even seen in children's shows and the sad thing is most of us don't even realize it! No wonder girls (and boys) are growing up with wrong ideas of headship in their relationships!

There are good shows and movies our there, however, they are few and far between. He had gotten sick a little over 2 weeks ago and just never really snapped out of it. He was not eating much and just slept most of the time; there was no tail wagging, and there were times he didn't even greet us at the door when we came home, totally not him! We took him to the vet on Saturday, realizing that he was getting worse and not better, and after doing some x-rays, the doctor (without doing anything invasive) was pretty sure that he had liver cancer. She said left the decision up to us as to what we would do from there, hard decisions, but we brought him home with some pain meds and anti-biotics (his blood-work showed an infection, and sometimes that can mimic the liver problems, although we realized that probably wasn't the case), we both thought we, as a family, needed to at least say good-bye before taking him back for good. However, he did not make it through the night, that was not an easy thing to witness, I'm glad the kids were in bed.

So this is the part that I say, stupid animals!!!! You let them into you house, fall in love with them and then they die! But there is more to it than that...there's the part about seeing what loyalty really is, and unconditional love, both of which he exhibited all the time. I was always amazed at how he would sit at my feet even if I had scolded him, oh, if I could be more like that and not take so things personally at times! And oh, to get excited about the simple things the way he did...just seeing the family come home, it was never just a routine event, we could have been gone for hours or just minutes and was always happy to see us. Or getting up in the morning and checking out the backyard as if he had never been there before; and the confidence in seeing a rabbit or squirrel just out of reach and thinking that he could get it (by the way, he did get a few). So I guess there is a lot to learn from man's best friend, and I did!

Good-bye old friend!

What I Learned From My Fast

Well, it's been a few days since my fast ended and I've been trying to digest what I have learned. It was not easy! What I mean by that is the rest of the world didn't stop because I was unplugged! It's really hard to ignore the TV when it's in the same room you are working in! My two older kids and I were the only ones in the house that participated in this assignment and we all chose to do it at different times, so that added to the fun as well.

I was amazed at the silence. It was quiet, especially at night when I usually turn off the TV and listen to my iPod. But overall, I didn't miss my iPod horribly. There are truly very few shows that I have to watch, I have a very short attention span and so it takes a lot for a show to keep my attention for any length of time. Besides, after a previous assignment ("the Evaluator", which I intend to share with you very soon) I had given up a few shows already. The thing that got me was the internet! Am I too nosey maybe? I have to check my e-mail, someone might have sent me something! Of course, 95% of my mail is junk that I delete before I read it! I tried to think of what I used to do before I had e-mail, can't remember! And in all honesty, I don't receive many e-mails that are so important that I need to deal with them immediately, they can usually wait a day or two for me to respond to them.

And honestly, I did not finish the 72 hours. I had "business" things I needed to get taken care of before I was finished, however, I came very close!

One thing I did notice, as my kids were doing it, I saw them all doing stuff together, even the ones not fasting. They were all sitting around together talking about stuff, that's pretty cool in my book.

Electronic Media Fast

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/STnwIq-QFhI/AAAAAAAAABI/2RKUxVffMjU/s320/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276512470206256658" />
Yes, it sounds uncomfortable doesn't it? Well, in the worldview curriculum that we are studying, we are talking this week about ethics and one of the assignments is to go on an electronic media fast. Want to join us?

Here's the assignment: for 72 consecutive hours you must refrain from electronic media of any kind. No TV, movies, radio, music (including iPods), and no internet (not even e-mail)! And you are NOT allowed to record your favorite show(s) if it falls with-in the time you are fasting. Of course, my kids are making the argument that they have already done this, compliments of Ike, when we were without power for four days!! It didn't work, they're still doing it!

This exercise is to show us just how addicted we are to media. And as we are talking about ethics, we have looked at just how influential the media is on us, whether we realize it or not. Good stuff! Great discussion!

So, I will be unplugged for the next few days (so call if you need me, I will not be checking e-mail!). I figured if I was going to assign this fast, I needed to do it too. I'm sure my eyes will be opened quite a bit as well as to just how much I rely on the electronic world. I'll let you know what I learn, but feel free to join us! Let me know if you do and what you learn!

It's That Time...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/SS7ZY-A_dQI/AAAAAAAAAA4/G41zcSTCDls/s400/P1030525.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273391236684674306" />
So we have a tradition at our house, my cousin and her husband come over on Thanksgiving night and we watch "Christmas Vacation." We have done this for so many years I have lost count. For us it's a great way to get in to the Christmas mood! We took this picture while on vacation in North Carolina this past June, my aunt bought us matching shirts to wear during our viewing of the movie. This tradition also extends into the summer because we watch this same movie on the 4th of July, I think it was hot one year and wanted a "cool" movie and we picked this one!

So what are your traditions? And how did they start, if you even remember! Traditions are fun things and make great memories for those involved!

A Quote for the Day

Life isn't a matter of milestones, but moments. -Rose Kennedy

A Long Way From Chicago

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_L_umgVYZXXw/SSRsTNyM6vI/AAAAAAAAAAw/XappEQsuNsw/s400/P1030837.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270456541303859954" />
The kids just finished a week-end full of productions. They are part of the Center Stage Drama group. We (I get to help out with the drama group) have been working on a play this fall that was taken from Richard Peck's book, "A Long Way From Chicago." Richard Peck's books are wonderful, they are written for older kids through teen and are absolutely hilarious! A great family read! Our favorite is "The Teacher's Funeral."

Pictured are Joey, Mrs. Effie Wilcox, Mrs. Wiedenbach's father (that was his actual name in the play), and Mr. Cowgill. The story of the play centers around a brother and sister from the 1930's, who visit their grandmother every summer and always seem to get involved in her crazy antics. They learn an awful lot about her as she is a tough old lady on the outside but tender on the inside. It's hard to believe that we are moving into the Christmas season! What happened? Not along ago the kids were in the pool; now it's closed and all covered with fallen leaves. Walk into any store and you are bombarded with Christmas decorations and music! Did I miss Thanksgiving? I don't remember making the turkey! Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and everyone has jumped past it and moved on! Have we become a society that wants to forget about being thankful and move on to the "getting" of what Christmas has become?

Are we wishing our lives away? As the "great philosopher" Bon Jovi once sang, "Life is just what happened, while we were busy making plans." Are we so busy making our plans that we are missing life? I hope not! It seems like we are always looking ahead and missin' all the wonderful stuff that's right in front of us: watchin' the kids throw the football with dad, the boys working on plays to beat dad, grandpa and uncle at the annual Turkey Bowl game, making gingerbread houses with mom, realizing that the kids now "get" sarcastic humor (and are now using it), watching the kids form their own opinions about things and how they articulate those opinions (we've heard a lot about politics lately from our political analyst, love that she has taken an interest in such things), and there's many more.

I guess what I'm trying to say is. . . this Christmas season, or better yet the entire year, while we must plan for things, let's also be thankful for what we have right in front of us and not get so far ahead of ourselves that we miss the good stuff!

How Do You See It?

What's your prescription? What's your view? How do you see it? The world, that is! I'm talking about your worldview! It's how you see the world, your most basic beliefs that color everything you see in life and how you act because of them.

But where do they come from you might ask? Well, one illustration I read said that we get our worldview the same way we catch a cold...from those around us. How do those around us influence our view? We are a very persuasive people and very tolerant! We don't want to offend anyone, so we allow them to make choices that go against what we know is right saying nothing, and after a while we can start to believe it's ok too. So what's the "Vitamin C" to ward off this cold? It's God's Word! We need to be digging deep into His Word and when we see something that goes against it, we will know it's an impostor and put our guard up to protect our thinking. But it doesn't stop there...we must be willing to be "contagious." We must speak the truth with love. When we as Christians do not speak up, our light becomes dim; this world is awfully dark and we must be a beacon of light in this darkness.

So why am I telling you all of this? While I know that worldview has become a bit of a "buzz" word recently, it is a very important topic. Only 10% of professing Christians have a Biblical worldview! Are you shocked? Do you need a new prescription?

We are teaching our children Biblical Worldview or more simply, how to THINK Biblically. You can not teach something without first learning it yourself, and I am learning a lot right now, so you will be getting what's on my heart and what I personally am learning! It's not always comfortable but I won't apologize for what God's Word says. And I do pray that the Holy Spirit might use the words of this blog to stretch you and make your light shine brighter!

Romans 12:2 "Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect." (NLT)

And We're Off...

So this is a totally new experience for me, sharing my thoughts with anyone who cares to know them!

The title that I have chosen for the blog is taken from 1 Timothy 6:20-21, "...guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith." This is one of those verses that keeps coming to mind. God has given us so many things with which we need to be faithful--our relationships, His Word, our minds, our children, I could go on.

Our world, now more than ever it seems, has so many contrary views vying for our attention, it is so easy to be swept away by "godless chatter" and "opposing ideas" of what our culture thinks is knowledge or truth. If we are not thinking Biblically, we are in danger of wandering.

Ahhh, thinking Biblically, now that's a topic for discussion. And I promise that I will visit that exact topic along the way.

Thanks for visiting!
